Girls Will Be Girls

We had 3 daughters in 2 1/2 years. Busy!  And I was shocked every time my husband was the the butt of jokes from his fraternity "brothers" about his unfortunate situation.  Made me determined that my girls would be able to always land on their feet and stand on their own two feet. They would not be pushovers, but would be strong and confident and capable. They were girley girls all the way...sparkles, princesses, glitter everywhere, but they were not going to be sissies. They would not cry in baseball.  So when my young daughter was playing and planting her garden she was not afraid to get her pink gloves dirty. She discovered a whole colony of earth worms...and collected them in a plastic rinsed out ice cream container.  Everyday she would care for her worms...keep the worms in the shade and keep the soil moist. She named the worms. One day I heard crying.  My other daughter was standing by the worms, crying those big crocodile tears..she wanted a worm collection too.  I explained to my daughter who had the collection it was also in her best interest to share, and she should think about this and try to figure something out.  The daughter that wanted the worms was in agreement with this perspective and stopped crying. I went back in the house and I didn't hear any more crying. The girls were both happy. My daughter split every worm in half.

  2. lol i didnt expect the last sentence XD but i think earthworms survive after theyre split in two?
    lovely girls it seems :-D

  3. With any other creature this would have been a ghastly ending, but these worms probably survived their vivisection just fine. Please don't tell me otherwise.

  4. I wish I could say that by talking to my daughter to be tough she would be.Truth is that my daughter does stand up for herself but very quietly.I think most people think they can walk all over her because of her quiet nature. But they are quite shocked when she opens her mouth and lets them know in a nice way that she won't have any of that.
That was nice of her to share. My daughter would have done the same thing. She has always been a good sharer.Earth worms actually don't die after that happens as gross as that is they go on living.

  8. Oh I had to laugh at this one. Told the story to Robert and he laughed too. So sweet to share in innocence.

  9. There is obviously great confusion among your fans....do the worms actually survive being "shared??" or did you have to have a teary-eyed funeral for all the deceased!! LOL! Kids!

    ReplyDelete
  10. That was funny...you have to laugh at the thought processes of kids! Love this story!

  15. So funny! My mom said that when my sister and I were young (about 6 and 3 years old) I said something to her like "all of nature should be beautiful", then I went outside to play. When she later went out to check on us, my sister and I had about 30 snails lined up in a row and we had colored each of their shells with our color crayons!

  33. Honesty at its best.

BTW, how old were the girls then?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh no! hahhaaa. this reminds me of a story about a time when I took my then young son shopping when he had some of his 'own' money & wanted to know if he had enough change for some candy... I told him... No, you will have to break a dollar... so when it was time to pay he ripped a dollar in half and asked the cashier if that was big enough! Have a great week!

I'll have to continue seeking your advice via your posts. :) that was a great story. Your conclusion got me. I did not see that coming. I wasn't sure if I should laugh. (because it was hilarious) or cringe (because the image of worms torn in half got to me!)... Eeeeeekkk!!!! Good post. :)

  60. Cute story. Love your statement "my girls would be able to always land on their feet and stand on their own two feet. They would not be pushovers, but would be strong and confident and capable." I've raised my 21 year old daughter the same way. She's tough and smart and capable. Love it!

  61. I'll never think that girls will be boys.

But a worm will become two earthworms after being chopped into two.

    Have a good day.

    ReplyDelete
  63. What a hoot! When my daughter was four she was out in the yard digging up worms too. She amassed a nice pile of them also. I was grossed out, but glad that she had the guts to get her hands dirty. I don't think she chopped any up though lol.

  70. lol, and EWWW! I was not a girlie girl growing up but I still didn't like bugs or worms. I am working hard to teach Joslyn the importance of bugs. But I have to laugh when she shows her girlie side. Not wanting to get muddy. Wants to dress up. I love every minute of her girlie side, and I I get more and more excited as her little personality shows up!

    ReplyDelete
  71. haha, whoops! not quite what you had in mind, I'll guess ;) I think worms can grow back though if they get cut, right?

  72. This story is soo cute. My son is three and just discovered worms in a good way. Last year he ran away screaming when i tried to get him to hold a worm this year though we learned about how they are our "Garden friends" lol and he started collecting them as well. Although one day last week he thought they were too hot and put them in the rain barrel to go swimming.... they never resurfaced. Another lesson learned.
I know it was a while ago but I just got your comment and I am now following!!!! Your stories are so precious. Those are the moments that make you thank God for motherhood!

  77. I am the worm breaker girl I am afraid when I was small about five. My one brother taught me the in's and outs of fishing so he said I had to learn to do my own worm picking also. At midnight after a rain. Tin can on my leg lower to my ankle tied with a rope the can. To drop the worms in by hand. Then quickly pick up the worms as fast as I can.I never bought worms. I even sold them to the Americans back then. Then the breaking them in half when fishing. So I help my neighbour kids do it to this day. They went yuk but give them ten minutes of a 70 year old gal here. They mastered it. SO I had to butt in on your cute story.Do your girls fish with Daddy or you?
