How Could They Pick That Movie After That Health Class?
My 12 year old son came home from school with a headache. He said it was from the movie they watched in school. The Muppets. I said, "Why did you watch that movie?" He informed me Remember the Titian's was last months reward and the first time the school did this...and it was a huge hit with the students. The movie was shown as a reward to about 600 middle school students who didn't get a red card the whole month. My son saw the same irony and asked,"Why would they show the Muppets?" raised his eyebrows and handed me their health outlines on human sexuality and birth control methods and STDs and drugs to avoid snorting...

I am a public school teacher and if I want to show the kids a movie that is not on a board-approved list, I make sure I get permission from parents. It would require advance planning, but this would be a better approach.
ReplyDeleteI loved the Muppets! As a middle school teacher, I understand the fine line of trying to find the right movie for all. Sorry your son didn't like it!
ReplyDeletemy mom was a media specialist (in old terms a librarian) they were never allowed to show Disney movies because you would have to ask Disney directly to view the movie. & if i an area church around here got in trouble for showing the football game on a big screen ... i'm sure that something was wrong with this situation. hope the school covered their basics. i'm shocked this day & age that they still show movies in school. when not all kids like the same thing. sounds like the teachers needed a break from the kids & this was the best offer. i wonder? i see both sides of this story. my parents were both teachers but i yet i get how parents feel as well. save the movies for home life. nuts!! ReplyDeleteThe Muppets, birth control, STDs & drugs... interesting grouping. I understand that it is hard to please everyone & meet every parent's guidelines... wonder what the next reward movie choice will be?
ReplyDeleteI think extra playground time would be a better reward, however, I'm an early childhood teacher. I'm not sure middle school students still play. Bonnie
ReplyDeleteI saw The Muppets with three of my grandchildren. I was disappointed, as I thought it was the dumbing down of the Muppets, but my granddaughters, aged, 13, 11, and 8 really liked it.
ReplyDeleteRemember the Titans PG is a great movie. The football story involves racial tensions and compromise. Egos give into respect for the other's talent and teamwork. It is a true story. I met the real coach and his wife when he spoke at a Chamber event.
ReplyDeleteI think they should pick out a couple of movies and let the students vote. Maybe at least they would please some of the students.

ReplyDeleteSounds like a dichotomy of enormous proportions. The Muppets vs. STD's, birth control, and drugs. No wonder it gave your son a headache.

ReplyDeleteThere is definitely another movie that can deal against STDs, drugs, etc... but The Muppets? They could have given some students the option to say no-thank-you for a movie... after all, it's a reward... so opting out from the reward should be accepted, no?

ReplyDeleteIn the UK films are approved to be watched but never given as a 'treat' during the school day. They are kept for special occasions like Christmas and then the students have a choice to opt out of watching them. There is also film club run and again certain movies are sent to the school and the children then need to review them but this is an extra curricular activity you sign up for so essentially the parents have a say in it as well as the child. Of course this is only for juniors in primary school so the ageing is from 7- 10 years.
ReplyDeleteSenior school is for children 10-16 years and they are lucky to get to view a movie twice a year (last day of Christmas and last day of summer term) unless of course it is directly involved with the curriculum in which case it tends to bore them stupid!!
ekks... i didn't really like the muppets either but std, and drugs along in the same lines with the muppets... uhmmm... okay? lol

It was a very interesting combination - I am not sure that it was an appropriate movie to show at school anyway. I think it has gone way beyond silly!

ReplyDeleteIt amazes me that any school will show a movie in this day and age without approval from parents. Everyone has a different opinion of what they want their children exposed to, so I think that would only be right.

ReplyDeleteI like the Muppet movies well enough for my 4 year old grandson..I don't get it as a "pick" for middle school. I would think a lot of the kids would think it juvenile.

ReplyDeleteAm I missing something? It's a movie, and a very good movie. I love the Muppets. Why should the movie be anything related to the health class? It's just a movie to entertain.

ReplyDeleteHow strange. I agree with the others: seems like too immature a choice after that health class! I do like the Muppets though, although haven't seen the newest movie and have always been disappointed with every Muppet film besides the original one. It seems only fair that the rewarded students could opt out of the movie and maybe read by themselves in the library?!

Okay, this just reaffirmed why I no longer teach. By the way, Remember the Titans was filmed at a school where I taught and at the stadium where I cheered many a football game. Great lessons in this film.

ReplyDeleteThe muppets was probably a bit immature for that group of school children. Perhaps cartoons was what some of them needed after the heavy class just given.
ReplyDeleteThe Muppets is a ridiculous choice. My kid would have suffered through it but complained later...a better choice would have been one that showed the lighter side of dark adolescence...is there such a movie? Maybe one of the teachers raided her pre-schoolers DVD stash...
